Sky News has appointed Associated Press’ Caro Kriel as its new head of international news.

Kriel is currently Europe news director at the news agency and has some 20 years’ experience in foreign news reporting.

After starting her career in her native South Africa, Kriel spent six years as head of international video at AP and two years as its Russian news director – securing the agency’s first ever interview with President Vladimir Putin.

She said: “I have long admired Sky News’ bold and brave coverage of the biggest stories in the world and am excited to join its award-winning foreign news team.”

Kriel replaces Dan Williams who is now head of politics at Sky News following Esme Wren’s departure to edit BBC’s Newsnight.

Jonathan Levy, Sky News’ director of newsgathering and operations, said: “We’re delighted that Caro is joining Sky News.

“She’s steeped in visual story-telling and will bring to Sky 20 years of foreign news experience and the leadership and ideas to take our brilliant international journalism to the next level.”
